Is travelling ligth(er) an option for you?

Is travelling ligth(er) an option for you?

Is traveling lighter an option for you?

The plan is made and the plan is agreed on. You go to Bonaire this year for your annual dive-trip. Tickets are booked and you are in contact with your preferred dive center to finalize your plan and figure out where to stay, what car rental company to use and, where you will be diving and what you are going to do and/or learn that week. There is one more thing you need to consider, and that is are you going to travel light or not.

Traveling. What is meant to be fun, sometimes turns into not so much fun and a hassle. What is it that turns travel into a hassle and a bad start of your dive trip? Damaged, missing or lost luggage.

Before you can even start considering packing your dive gear, you are quite busy. You need to replace the battery of your dive computer, you need to assure that all rubber straps are not dried out or torn, you need to have your regulator serviced and you need to have your BCD checked on functionality and safety. Then you need to pack it all and make sure you do not forget to check your travel insurance to double check if all your luggage is insured and insured at the right value.
I will not bother you with reminding you of the carrying part and traveling with all your luggage to the airport. I will also not go into the frustration or noticing that your just serviced regulator suddenly starts free-flowing.
When you travel with all your gear, you need to be at the airport early to have the time to check in your luggage. What if you travel without all that gear?

Checking in your luggage comes with a fee. A pretty stiff and continuously rising fee per suitcase. That wouldn’t be so bad if you had a guarantee that your luggage actually arrived at the destination of your choice, undamaged and on time!
Ever needed to claim missing luggage upon arrival on a Caribbean island while thinking back to all the work you had to do to prepare your dive gear for this trip and the costs that came with that? What if you travel without all that gear?

Luggage claims on Bonaire are a hassle. Not only is the paperwork part is a hassle, but since there are limited flights to Bonaire, the wait on the missing luggage is a long one. There are cases known that the dive-trip was over before the luggage arrived. Imagine the hassle having to organize shipping back it all back home when not even on the island anymore.

Does this happen a lot? No. I am happy to inform you that during low season only 3% of the divers checking in at our dive center have arrived the island lighter than they left their homes (aka, they are missing luggage). During high season those numbers sadly look completely different. About 16% have to make last minute arrangements to be able to dive because of missing luggage. During high-season that can become a problem, I am afraid I have to admit. Sometimes all the gear is rented out and then what……

If I may, allow me to paint you a different traveling picture;

There is one more thing we will help you with, which equipment-package you prefer to reserve.

Once taken care of that, your travel preparations stop. No need to replace the battery of your dive computer, no need to assure that all rubber straps are not dried out or torn, no need to have your regulator serviced and no need to have your BCD checked on functionality and safety. No need to pack it all and no need to check if your travel insurance covers your gear at the right value.
No need to be at the airport early to have the time to check in any luggage. How does traveling without all that gear sound so far?

Checking in no luggage comes with no fee. Arriving without any check-in luggage saves quite some time because there is no need to go to the luggage claim area.  Just go through customs and go get your rental car. Your vacation has started.
